Recipe: Golden Turmeric Milk

Golden turmeric milk is an ancient ayurvedic drink that tastes delicious. More importantly it provides a really good way to get turmeric into our diets on a regular basis. Turmeric contains curcumin which is believed to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. If these aren't enough reasons to start including turmeric in your diet, it is also believed to be fantastic for our skin and to slow down premature ageing.

This is a really nice drink to have in the evening just before bed time maybe in place of a hot chocolate. It's very warming and settling.

The milk is made in two stages. First you make the turmeric paste which can be stored in the fridge. Then when making the drink, you add the turmeric paste to the other drink ingredients. If you are on a low sugar diet, you don't have to add the honey but it does affect the taste of the drink. You might think it odd that black pepper and coconut oil feature in this drink. The reason is that it is understood that by taking turmeric with black pepper and oil at the same time, the absorbtion by the body of turmeric is greatly increased.

The paste should be enough to make about 12-15 portions of this drink.


For the paste

1/4 cup of turmeric powder

1/2 teaspoon of ground pepper

1/2 cup of water

For the golden milk

1 cup of nut milk

1 teaspoon of coconut oil

1/2 teaspoon of turmeric paste

1/2 teaspoon of honey

1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon powder


1. To make the paste, put the paste ingredients in a small saucepan and heat over a medium heat, stirring constantly. Heat until the mixture turns to a thick paste and then remove from the heat to allow to cool. Once cooled, pour into a glass jar and store in the fridge.

2. To make the drink, add the golden milk ingredients (including the 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric paste that you made at step 1) to a saucepan and heat gently stirring constantly. Don't allow the mixture to boil. Once heated, pour into a mug and drink immediately.
